The Institute for Human-Animal Connection advocates for the ethical care of animals and works to promote healthy relationships between people and animals. Animal-assisted interventions, where animals are included in work to help humans heal or improve their quality of life, are catching on like wildfire. Too often, however, well-meaning practitioners overlook the welfare of their animal partners, sacrificing the animals' well-being for that of the client. The Institute works to infuse animal ethics and welfare into all its initiatives, so that our fellow beings may be included in ways that don't do them harm. Lasting change is only possible when it addresses policy development issues. For example, the Institute may seek to inform the legal, criminal justice and human service professions' response to cases of co-occurring interpersonal violence and animal cruelty. The Institute may also address “pets in the workplace” policies to ensure that they honor both the therapeutic value of animal-assisted interventions and the needs of coworkers. |
